Comfort Island
Dear Lindsay,
Yesterday was a blustery, grey day. I decided to make turkey meatballs and spaghetti and invited Jane and Kevin Heffron from across the river to join us. It’s generally an easy trek- boating across the channel from one house to another, but the wind has made it difficult, especially when docking.
Turkey meatballs are an easy go-to. I put lots of grated parmesan/romano cheese, fennel seed and chopped caramelized onions, with plenty of herbs de provence and italian seasoning, and plenty of salt and pepper. Twenty minutes at 375, turning once, and then popped into the sauce to finish for another 45 minutes…they’re always perfect.
Conor made a giant salad, the leftovers of which we’ll take tonight to dinner with the family over at Thousand Island Park.
We’ve shortened the dining table for this part of the season- now fitting 6 people. Last week I asked Jeff to arrange some yellow roses for the table. Surprisingly, he picked the blue vase from a pretty large collection of cut glass and clear crystal vases, which are generally my go-to’s. I loved the look and the flowers still being good, I chose the Caskata blue for the table. A great combination.
The conversation was dominated by senior topics: travel, retirement, estate planning- all things that Conor, at 24, patiently endured. By 8:30 we were done and Conor helped the Hefron’s get off the dock and on their way across the river. We then watched a great movie- On the Sea, a British film set in North Wales. Beautiful and incredibly moving. I love watching movies with Conor. We have the same sensibilities.
We’ve started to make the list for closing up the . And today, we start in earnest, as we leave in 23 days and make our way back south to Atlanta.
Stephen
