Dear Jason,
I know you love New Orleans. I do too, but maybe, like most newbie tourists, a bit too much.
Yesterday, it was slow going. By the afternoon we had rallied enough for a late brunch and tea dance which culminated in a Second Line walk with two jazz bands to the bars on Bourbon Street.
Conor and I had never participated in one, and we were admonished to actively wave our handkerchiefs above our heads.
The New Orleans locals are fierce advocates of their traditions. Steve, a new friend, kept me honest with the kerchief as he walked and danced and explained the tradition.
The Second Line these days is a celebration of community, life and resilience.
Conor said he liked that onlookers and neighbors would wave and smile, joining in on the positive energy.
And though it is celebratory, I felt there was a sense of defiance in the Second Line.
We defy death and sadness. We defy oppression. We defy darkness.
When it was finished we had a drink in the bar with our hosts Clint and Chris and then made our way home for pizza and an early night.
It has been a whirlwind few days and Iām glad to be in the car with Conor, driving home.
Looking forward to seeing this week Jason and catching up. Stephen
